Summer School
July 2 through August 15, a program in mathematics and language arts is offered (5 days per week, 9-12 pm). Students may choose to concentrate on just one area or both. This is a opportunity to reenforce skills or to get a ‘head start’.
There is also an afternoon program from 1-3 pm, field trips, study sessions, and 2 days per week at Dalplex.
Registration is May 1 - June 1.
Summer School Language Arts:
Course 1: Intro to ESL
This class is for the learner with very little exposure to English. The class begins with basic vocabulary, conversational vocabulary, and simple sentence structure.
Course 2: Intro to Grammar
The student focuses on the details of sentence structure, verb conjugations, negation, and grammar rules. The course involves written work as well.
Course 3: Advanced Conversation
The student works in small groups with their teacher in order to practice oral conversation. All aspects of the English language are covered, including idioms.
Course 4: Advanced Grammar and Composition
Students focus on reading short stories and answering comprehensive questions. Through this process, advanced grammar is introduced.
Course 5: Creative Writing and Novel Study

Course 6: Writing the Research Paper
Students learn all the skills required in writing a research paper that includes bibliography, footnotes, appendix and annotations.
Summer School Mathematics
Course 1: Arithmetic
Students are introduced to numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, order of operations, brackets, powers and exponents.
Course 2: Beginning Algebra
Students are introduced to rational and irrational numbers, constants and variables, numerical and algebraic expressions, linear equations and inequalities; basic geometry and shapes, measurements, transformations, algebraic identities, basic statistics and probability
Course 3: Intermediate Algebra
Students continue with numbers and algebra; they are introduced to more in-depth concepts and work on rational, irrational and complex numbers, polynomials and equations, rational expressions and equations, introduction to quadratic expressions, equations and their graphs, sinusoidal function, introduction to trigonometry, trigonometric identities and their graphs, systems of linear equations, matrices and operations, geometry, shapes, statistics and probability.
Course 4: Advanced Mathematics to Pre-calculus
Students learn to revise basic math and continue to learn numbers and operations, functions, and their applications; polynomials (second, third and forth degree); exponential, logarithmic and inverse trigonometric functions, identities and their graphs; sequences and series, polygons and their applications, circle geometry, 3-D geometry, limits and rates, derivatives and their applications; integrals techniques and their applications, vector calculus.
Course 5: Preparation for SAT and ACT
Students study and revise the SAT mathematical concepts described by the College Board handbook and website for 2008/2009. Students go through previous pass papers and exams, and have the opportunity to drill and practice the topics required for their SAT preparation.
