Apprenticeships and Mentorships

Apprenticeship and mentorship programs are integrated into the curriculum at every grade. This allows the student to explore and experience ‘real life’ situations within the community and business world that are directly related to his development. Students are then able to pursue careers in the sciences, arts, sports, etc., especially where training is preferable at early ages. It also encourages the young adult to step out into the world beyond the classroom and embody what has been understood. In this way, learning is presented as a lifelong process. Appreciation of challenges, and the discovery that fears are essential stepping stones to discover further confidence is fundamental to KVA education. There is a sense of journey that does not end with the school day, but continues into every aspect of one’s life.

Following are examples of some apprenticeships and mentorships experiences:

Microbiology Research
An apprenticeship was arranged for a student who had an interest in microbiology and worked with a Ph.D student in that field. The Ph.D student was able to take ownership of a small piece of the research, and the KVA student was able to use it as credit towards his Biology 12 course.

Chemistry Co-Op in Pharmacological Research
An opportunity was created for a chemistry student to do a co-op in pharmacological research. The focus of the co-op was to assist the pharmacy master’s student, to gain an understanding of a master’s program, and to assist with managing, stocking, and organizing the lab.

Flower Shop Attendant / Floral Designer
A local commercial florist accepted an apprentice for a semester to learn the management, operation and floral design business.

Web-based Technology
A partnership was created with Pleiades Consulting Inc. for a student to learn to write code. Language arts instruction was integrated with computer assignments.
